Artisan Juan Filomeno Manuel and his wife lead a cooperative of 70 people who have been making Ocoxal out of Montezuma pine for generations. In total, the cooperative includes 12-15 families. The vast majority are artisan women, who are heads of families and single mothers. Juan and his extended family are part of the Mazahua indigenous community. They make cross stitch in wool and basting in addition to making ocoxal out of Montezuma pine. Production of these beautiful items takes place in Citacuaro, Michoacán, Villa de Allende, and Donato Guerra in the State of Mexico.
