The leather purse features textile weaving, from a cooperativo of women from the small pueblo of San Juan Chamula, in the Chiapas highlands (7,200 ft above sea level). The town has a population of approx. 3,400 people and 99.5% of its inhabitants speak Tzotzil, a Mayan language of the Tzotzil Maya people who have lived in these highlands for centuries. The town is autonomous, allowing no outside police or military and police themselves. The primary source of income for the men is the agriculture of corn, beans, and potatoes. While the women are the keepers of their textile traditions and pass down their knowledge to the next generation.
